Small hard bumps beneath the skin may be an indication that you have a cyst. Often found in the neck, face, scalp, and/or torso, cysts can be composed of solid material or fluid. Although cysts are typically harmless, they can be very painful – and occasionally malignant – in some cases. Cysts can be eliminated with medicine, or in some instances, surgery may be necessary. Our doctors advise that you do not try to remove a cyst on your own, or even touch the area at all. These actions could make the problem worse and cause infection in the cyst, which can produce swelling and even scarring in the area.
