The Hidden Dangers of Sunless Tanning
The incidence rates of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers are increasing rapidly in the United States, likely because of increased UV exposure. Sunless tanning products are generally a safe alternative to achieve bronzed skin while reducing the incidence of skin cancer. However, recent studies by the National Health Interview Survey (2015) found that men and women in the United States who use sunless tanning products are more likely to use indoor tanning beds and report having recent sunburns. In addition, individuals who use sunless tanning products are less likely to use sunscreen, seek shade or wear protective clothing when outdoors. Although sunless tanning products are an attempt to reduce the risk of skin cancer, individuals must also refrain from participating in other risky skin cancer–related behaviors.
