How Does Hyaluronic Acid Reduce Signs of Aging?

The latest buzzword today in skincare is hyaluronic acid. It is showing up not only in fillers, but in topical products as well. So what is all the excitement about and will it really improve the appearance of one’s skin? Our skilled medical team explains what this innovative ingredient is all about.

Hyaluronic acid or HA is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the body. It provides cushion and lubrication in the joints, nerves, hair, skin, and eyes. Fifty percent of the body’s HA supply is found in the skin. It is also found in the spaces between our skin cells where it provides moisture, plumpness, firmness, and suppleness to the skin. As we age, we start to produce less HA, and this becomes more pronounced over the age of 40. By the time you are between 40-50 years of age, you have already lost 50% of the HA that you had when you were 20. Without enough HA, the skin appears dehydrated, less supple, and, most importantly, old. The good news is that HA comes in many products to fit just about everyone’s needs and budget.

Most of us are familiar with fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, which are both made of hyaluronic acid. The HA in these products is structurally similar to the HA in your skin. These fillers are colorless gels that are injected into the skin to soften facial wrinkles. They are also used to add volume to the lips and the hollows under your eyes (tear troughs). You can expect these fillers to last anywhere from about six months to a year.

HA is now showing up in a variety of topical products such as moisturizers, lip plumpers, makeup, and hair products. Applied topically, HA can increase hydration, improve elasticity, and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful and luminous look.

At Silverberg Surgical and Medical Group we offer a variety of different ways to add hyaluronic acid into your skin care routine. If you are interested in fillers, JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® can instantly give you a more youthful appearance. If you are interested in a topical product, we offer the new HA5 from SkinMedica®, and our own Silverberg Surgical Advanced HA Serum. These skin care products can provide instant smoothing results and continuous hydration throughout the day. Another bonus is they are recommended for all skin types.

Whatever products you choose, hyaluronic acid can help you to improve your appearance. Stop into our office today to find out more about the latest advancement in skin technology.
